GREENHOUSE – SUMMER ALL YEAR ROUND

IMG_1199The construction of greenhouses in the state institution “Boarding school for orphans of the Executive government authority of the Sughd region” and the state institution “Special boarding school for deaf and hard of hearing children named after Tukhtaboy Gafforov” is not just the creation of a place for growing vegetables and greens. This is a project that can bring great benefits both to the pupils themselves and to the entire institution as a whole.

As part of the project: “Inclusive and Advanced Education for Vulnerable Children and Youth”, financed by the Government of Switzerland, polycarbonate greenhouses were built in two target boarding schools. The size of each greenhouse is: width – 3 m, length – 10 m, height – 2.1 m. It is important to note that the greenhouses are covered with 4 mm thick polycarbonate, which can withstand up to 250 kg of snow load and has ultraviolet protection. Ultraviolet protection allows to protect the plant from direct sunlight and control the climate inside the greenhouse.

Benefits for children

Occupational therapy and skill development:

  • Working in a greenhouse allows children to gain practical skills related to agriculture: planting, caring for plants, harvesting.
  • This is an excellent form of occupational therapy that helps develop motor skills, coordination of movements and responsibility.
  • This is especially important for children, as it allows them to adapt to life after boarding school and acquire useful skills.

Educational process:

  • The greenhouse will become part of the educational program, where children study plant biology, the basics of agronomy and ecology.
  • This makes learning more visual and interesting, linking theory with practice.

Psychological and social adaptation:

  • Working with plants has a calming effect on the psyche, helps relieve stress and tension.
  • Working together in a greenhouse helps develop communication skills and build a sense of teamwork.
  • This can become a place where children can feel needed and useful.

Proper nutrition:

  • Your own harvest of vegetables and greens will provide the pupils with fresh and healthy products.

Before the construction of the greenhouses began, specialists from the ICPO “Jovid” carried out work to determine the location and type of greenhouses. When choosing a location, the following were taken into account: illumination, sun direction in winter, soil structure, salinity, etc. To save irrigation water, drip irrigation was installed in the greenhouses, which allows for even distribution of moisture in the root system of plants. Work on the creation of 2 greenhouses began in February and was completed in April 2025. The greenhouses were transferred for use by means of an acceptance certificate. Vegetable crops and greens will be grown in the greenhouses, which will improve and diversify the diet of boarding school students.
