Speed reading is one of the tools for improving information processing.

IMG-20250408-WA0009 Speed reading is a skill that allows you to quickly perceive and understand the text you read. It is especially useful for children living in boarding schools, where access to educational resources may be limited. Based on this, within the framework of the project “Inclusive and Advanced Education for Vulnerable Children and Youth”, funded by the Government of Switzerland, speed reading courses were organized for 70 children from the state institution “Boarding school for orphans of the Executive government authority of the Sughd region”. This training course covers 24 lessons, each of which is 90 minutes long. The reasons for organizing speed reading courses:

  • Improving academic performance: Speed reading helps children learn educational material faster, which has a positive effect on their grades.
  • Developing cognitive skills: Speed reading classes train attention, memory and logical thinking.
  • Increased motivation for reading: When children see that they can read quickly and easily, they begin to enjoy the process more.
  • Expanding horizons: Speed reading allows children to become familiar with a large amount of information, which contributes to their intellectual development.
  • Preparation for adulthood: In the modern world, where information is constantly updated, the ability to quickly read and analyze text is an important skill.

The following methods are used during the speed-reading course. The speed-reading methods used were adapted for children living in a boarding school, namely:IMG-20250408-WA0016

  • Schulte tables: these are tables with randomly arranged numbers or letters. The child’s task is to find and indicate all the elements in the correct sequence as quickly as possible.
  • Exercises to expand the field of vision: These exercises help children see more words at a glance, which increases the speed of reading.
  • Reading without pronouncing: This method teaches children to perceive the text without internally pronouncing each word, which significantly speeds up the reading process.
  • Developing concentration: Concentration exercises help children focus on the text and not get distracted.

The following conditions were created in the boarding school to help children perceive information:

  • A favorable atmosphere was created: a reading room was organized for 70 children and all children were provided with a special book called: “Development of cognitive abilities.”
  • Individual approach: each child is unique, based on this, their individual characteristics and learning pace are taken into account.
  • Use of game elements: games and exercises are used during the training course to make the learning process more exciting and effective.
  • Regular classes: to achieve good results, 70 children practice speed reading every day from 15:00 to 16:30.
  • Encouragement and support: during the learning process, children are praised for their successes and supported in case of failures.
