Training Modules and Learning Materials Developed for Young Farmers in GBAO
As part of the project implementation, the development of a comprehensive training programme aimed at strengthening the technical knowledge and entrepreneurial skills of young people in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) has been completed. Project specialists developed five modern training modules, supporting handouts for each module, and a detailed schedule for the upcoming training sessions.
The training programme was designed with due consideration of the region’s agro-climatic conditions, local farming practices, and the needs of the target beneficiaries. All learning materials were prepared in clear and accessible language, making them suitable for both beginning farmers and members of rural communities. To ensure broad accessibility, the training materials were translated into Tajik and English.
The curriculum consists of five core training modules.
The first module focuses on Digital Agriculture and Precision Farming Technologies, introducing participants to modern digital tools, GPS-based technologies, mobile applications for soil and crop monitoring, and approaches to the efficient management of natural resources.
The second module covers Conservation Agriculture, emphasizing sustainable farming practices that preserve soil fertility, improve water-use efficiency, and prevent soil erosion—issues of particular importance in the mountainous areas of GBAO.
The third module addresses Post-Harvest Handling and Storage of Agricultural Produce. Participants learn modern techniques for sorting, drying, cooling, and storing agricultural products to reduce post-harvest losses and maintain product quality.
The fourth module introduces Food Safety and Packaging Standards, covering sanitary and hygiene requirements, appropriate packaging materials, and product preparation for access to higher-value markets.
The fifth module focuses on Entrepreneurship Development, providing participants with practical knowledge of business planning, financial management, market analysis, risk assessment, and the establishment of sustainable agricultural enterprises.
Each module follows a structured approach that combines theoretical instruction with practical exercises, group discussions, case studies, and field demonstrations. To assess learning outcomes, participants will complete both pre-training and post-training assessments, allowing trainers to measure knowledge gained throughout the programme.
In addition to the training modules, five sets of practical handouts have been developed. These materials include technical recommendations, diagrams, reference guides, checklists, and illustrations designed to reinforce learning and support the practical application of newly acquired knowledge in participants’ daily farming activities.
Particular attention has been given to establishing effective feedback mechanisms. Each handout includes the project’s contact information, including the project email address and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) hotline. This will enable participants to submit comments, recommendations, and reports of any challenges encountered during implementation, contributing to the continuous improvement of the training programme and strengthening communication with local communities.
At the same time, project specialists prepared a detailed training schedule. The curriculum has been organized according to a progressive learning approach, moving from fundamental concepts to more advanced practical topics. The training calendar takes into account the agricultural production cycle, seasonal farming activities, and participants’ availability, ensuring that farmers can attend training without disrupting their agricultural work and can immediately apply newly acquired knowledge in practice.
The newly developed training package provides a strong foundation for building the capacity of young farmers, promoting the adoption of modern agricultural technologies, supporting rural entrepreneurship, and strengthening the resilience of rural communities. Its practical orientation will enable participants not only to acquire new knowledge but also to apply it effectively to increase productivity, improve product quality, and expand their agribusiness opportunities.
