CHANNEL SELECTION

The goal of the project for the restoration and reconstruction of 16 canals in the Ishkoshim district of Tajikistan is to increase the water in the canals and irrigate new lands, which will lead to an increase in crop yields, improve food security and generate additional income for farmers and the population of the region.

2. Tupkhona channelTo this end, project staff, together with the Khukumat of Ishkashim district, selected 15 existing canals for repair and construction of 1 new canal. The selected channels meet the following criteria:

  1. Channels used by a relatively large number of residents of the area;
  2. Worn channels that have large water losses;
  3. Canals from which large agricultural lands are irrigated;
  4. Channels that do not harm the environment after repair and reconstruction.

2. Dashthun canal, ZumudgAs a result of joint actions, 15 canals were selected for repair and reconstruction and 1 new canal for construction. On the part of the project specialists, passports and cost estimates for each selected channel were prepared. It should be noted the great contribution of the population in the construction and reconstruction of canals. The population of the district will be involved in construction work as non-professional workers, namely: assistant craftsmen. The district Khukumat will also assist in granting permits and using local building materials such as stone, sand, soil, gravel, etc.
